Our first settlers were beckoned by our beautiful shores that still beckon visitors today.
In 1607, our nation’s first settlers to the new world landed right here on our beautiful shores. I wonder if they were lured by our amazing sunrise, or perhaps our abundant oysters, clams and fish? Today visitors can explore the site of this first landing located on the grounds of Fort Story, experience a guided tour and ascend the Cape Henry Lighthouse built in 1792. I visited this spring with a group; many made the climb and were excited when the gift shop attendant bestowed each a certificate to commemorate their accomplishment…a feat worthy of all! After a long day of learning about our settlers’ history, we enjoyed scrumptious seafood at local’s favorite, Waterman’s. Then the group retired for the evening at The Oceanfront Inn and awoke to an incredible sunrise view! I am sure you will agree with our first settlers’ choice to land on our shores was the right choice indeed! ~ Homegrown Original
